School Library Month / Mes de la biblioteca escolar

October is International School Library Month, and this year we will try to publish a list of the books in English that our school library has for your use. We hope this will encourage you to take them out of the shelves. Most of them are readers, some of which come with CDs. Reading and listening at the same time can really help you to learn English.

Octubre es el mes internacional de la biblioteca escolar y durante este año escolar vamos a intentar publicar una lista de los libros en inglés que hay para vuestro uso en nuestra biblioteca. Esperamos que esto os anime a sacarlos de las estanterías. La mayoría son "readers," y algunos vienen con CDs. Leer y escuchar a la vez puede realmente ayudaros a aprender inglés.

Daniel and St. Walpurga´s Eve / Daniel y la víspera de Santa Walpurga

Daniel Macías ha elaborado la ficha de un cuento romano sobre un hombre lobo. Puede que sea el primer texto escrito sobre hombres lobo, al menos en Europa. Lo publicamos hoy por ser la víspera de Santa Walpurga, una santa inglesa nacida en Devon hacia el año 710. Tradicionalmente, durante la víspera de la festividad de Santa Walpurga, los vampiros y los hombres lobo andan alborotados.

Daniel Macías has written the story report of a Roman tale about a werewolf. It might just be the first written record of werewolves, at least in Europe. We publish it today because it is St. Walpurga´s Eve. She was an English saint born in Devon circa 710. Traditionally, during the eve of her feastday vampires and werewolves come out.

THE WOLF / EL LOBO

The author: Gaius Petronius Arbiter was a Roman courtier during the reign of Nero. He is thought to be the author of the “Satyricon,” a satirical novel in verse and prose in which this story about a werewolf is included. Petronius was one of the first to write about lycantrophy.

El autor: Cayo Petronio Árbitro fue un cortesano romano durante el reinado de Nerón. Se le atribuye haber escrito el “Satyricón”, una novela satírica en prosa y verso en la que se encuentra este relato sobre un hombre lobo. Petronio fue uno de los primeros en escribir sobre la licantropía.

The Story: The narrator embarks on a journey from an inn during the night accompanied by a brave soldier. They stop to rest near some tombs and the soldier turns into a wolf and runs off. Frightened to death, the narrator manages to get home. There he is told a wolf has attacked his sheep and that one of his servants has pierced the wolf in the neck. The wounded wolf has, however, escaped. The next day the narrator returns to the inn. The soldier is there and a doctor is healing his neck.

El cuento: El narrador sale de viaje desde una hospedería durante la noche acompañado por un valiente soldado. Hacen un alto cerca de unas tumbas durante el cual el soldado se convierte en un lobo y sale corriendo hacia el bosque. Aterrorizado, el narrador consigue llegar a su hogar, donde le cuentan que un lobo ha atacado a sus ovejas y uno de los criados ha conseguido herirle en el cuello. El lobo herido, sin embargo, ha conseguido escapar. Al día siguiente el narrador vuelve a la hospedería. El soldado está allí, siendo atendido por un médico debido a una herida en el cuello.

We said it. These are more like the messages on merchandise made in China than like Japanese haigas. It´s only natural. That merchandise is what we see daily. But every time we try, we get better.

Lo dicho. Más que haigas japoneses son mensajes como los que vemos en las mercancias fabricadas en China. Es natural. Lo que vemos a diario son precisamente eso. Pero cada vez que lo intentemos de nuevo, saldrán mejor.

Sí, lo publicamos. No está tan mal.
