Three stories by / Tres Cuentos de
Gibran Jalil Gibran


Gibran Jalil Gibran was a Lebanese poet, painter, novelist and essaywriter. He was born in Bisharri, Lebanon, on January 6, 1883. He learned to speak and to write in English, which is probably one of the reasons why his works are famous in the western world. His most famous book is probably "The Prophet," published in 1923 and illustrated by the author. He died in New York in 1931 at the age of 48.

Gibrán Jalil Gibrán fue un poeta, pintor, novelista y ensayista libanés nacido en Bisharri, Líbano, el 6 de enero de 1883. Aprendió a hablar y escribir en inglés, y probablemente esa sea una de las razones por las que sus obras son tan famosas en occidente. Su obra mas importante es probablemente "El Profeta." publicada en 1923 e ilustrada por el mismo autor. Murió en Nueva York en 1931 a los 48 años.

Three Gifts / Tres Regalos









This story takes place in a city called Becharre. It doesn´t matter when.

Este cuento se desarrolla en una ciudad llamada Becharre. No importa cuando.


The characters we can highlight are: / Los personajes destacados son:
- The Prince, a rich but just ruler.
El príncipe, un gobernante rico pero justo.
- The man. poor and very critical of the prince.
El hombre, que es pobre y siempre critica al principe.
- The prince´s servant, who takes the prince´s three gifts to the poor man.
El siervo del principe, que lleva los regalos del principe al pobre.
- The bishop. who explains the meaning of the gifts to the poor man.
El obispo, que explica el significado de los tres regalos al hombre pobre.

The topic that prevails in this story is the envy the poor man feels toward the prince.
El tema que predomina en esta historia es la envidia que el hombre pobre siente hacia el príncipe.


The action can be divided in three parts: / La acción podemos dividirla en tres partes:

- It begins with a description of the prince as rich but just ruler and of the man as poor but very envious. / Al principio se describe al príncipe como un gobernante rico pero justo y al hombre como pobre y muy envidioso.

- The prince, tired of being criticized, decides to send the poor man three gifts. / El principe, harto de ser criticado, decide mandar tres regalos al hombre pobre.

- The man is happy with the gifts until the bishop explains them to him, whereupon his shame makes him hate both the prince and the bishop even more. / El hombre está contento hasta que el obispo le explica el significado de los regalos y entonces su verguenza le lleva a odiar al principe y al obispo aun mas.






The Pomegranates / Las Granadas


The story takes place in an orchard with pomegranate trees. It is timeless.
La historia se desarrolla en un huerto con granados. Es atemporal.


The main characters are: / Los personajes principales son:

- The man who owns the orchard with the pomegranate trees. / El dueño de las granadas.
- The neighbours who buy the pomegranates /Los vecinos que compran las granadas.

The main theme of this story is that people have no idea what is valuable.
El tema principal de este cuento es que la gente no tiene ni idea lo que valen las cosas.

The action can be divided into two parts: In the first part, we see how the neighbours of the orchard owner ignore the pomegranates when they can have them for free. In the second part we see how these same people pay for the pomegranates as soon as their owner decides to sell them for a price.

La acción podemos dividirla en dos partes: En la primera parte del cuento vemos como los vecinos del dueño del huerto de granados no les hacían ni caso cuando eran gratis. En la segunda parte, el dueño pone precio a sus granadas y la gente empieza a consumirlas.



Miss Ruth / Doña Ruth


The story takes place in the country, in a spot from which one can see a white house on a hill.

La historia se desarolla en el campo, en un lugar desde el que se ve una casa blanca sobre una colina.
The characters are: /Los personajes son:
- Four men, one of them very old. / Cuatro hombres, uno de ellos anciano.
- Miss Ruth, about whom no one knows anything much.
Doña Ruth, de la cual nadie sabe nada en concreto.

The main topic is the mysterious life of Miss Ruth.
El tema principal es la vida misteriosa de Doña Ruth.

The action can be divided into two parts: Three men discuss a house that they believe belongs to a woman variously described as an old witch, a beautiful woman, a landowner who is mean to her employees. In the second part an old man is questioned and says Miss Ruth is dead and the house bewitched.


La acción se puede dividir en dos partes: Tres hombres discuten sobre una casa que creen que pertenece a una mujer descrita de formas distintas como una vieja bruja, una mujer hermosa y una terrateniente que explota a sus empleados. En la segunda parte un viejo es interrogado y responde que Doña Ruth ha muerto y que la casa donde vivía está embrujada.

  1. Teresa, Very good. Only two really important mistakes. La palabra granada es una falsa amiga. En inglés grenades son las que utilizan los militares. Las frutas son pomegranates.Ya lo he corregido al publicar. Also a small problem with "time." I don´t think the story happened on November 7, 2005. Please check. Mr. Gibran´s photo, muy bien elegida. Asi se ve que también fue young. Falta tu comentario personal.

  2. Yo opino que la gente tiene que ser solidaria y honrrada con las demás personas. Además cada una de las personas tenemos nuestra parte de razón en determinados momentos.
