Attempted Haigas / Intentos de Haigas

For Poetry Day we tried our hand at something that looks very simple but is really very difficult: haigas. These three line, seventeen syllable maximum Japanese poems have to make sense. The second line usually makes sense out of the other two. And they often - but not always - refer to a season of the year. If you don´t try, you don´t learn, so we aren´t daunted by results. At the very worse, we´re good at writing messages in English like those that appear on pencil boxes, notebooks, mugs and other stuff made in China. One day some of us will try to write haigas again, and we´re sure they´ll be better.

Para el día de la poesía intentamos escribir haigas, poemas que parecen muy fáciles de escribir pero que en realidad son muy difíciles. Estos poemas japoneses de tres lineas, maximo 17 sílabas, han de tener sentido. La segunda linea casí siempre hace que las otras dos cobren sentido. Y con frecuencia - pero no siempre- hacen referencia a una estación del año. Si no intentas, no aprendes. Así que no nos sentimos demasiado desalentados por los resultados. A lo peor, sabemos escribir mensajes de esos en inglés que aparecen en los estuches de lápices, cuadernos, jarritas y otros artículos fabricados en China. Un día volveremos a crear haigas y seguro que lo hacemos mejor.
