How much land does a man need?
Where and when does the story take place? This story takes place in a small village where the protagonist is living when the story starts and in nearer or further places he goes to as the story unfolds. As for time, we could set the story in a period when one mainly lived from agriculture and animal husbandry.
The main characters are:
Pahom: He is the protagonist of the story, a man who has worked hard and honestly for his family and who originally had no lands of his own, which is why he tries to own more and more.
The Bashkirs: a Russian ethnic group, similar to the Turks. Look at the Bashkir couple in the painting below.
Pahom´s servant, who accompanies him on his trip to Bashkir territory.
Synopsis: Pahom is a farmer who has worked all his life for his family on the lands of other people. This is what leads him to ambition owning his own lands, which he manages to do at a great effort. His lands make him prosper and he is very pleased and happy but nevertheless risks what he has to buy more lands, which he again manages to do, again improving his financial situation. Later someone tells him that the Bashkirs exchange lands for a few trifling gifts. Pahom immediately travels to Bashkir territory and the head of the Bashkirs makes a proposal: Pahom can have all the land he can cross on foot during one day. But Pahom´s ambition is his undoing, because he dies in his effort to gain as much land as possible. He is buried by his servant in only six feet of land, which is all he now needs.
Conclusion: As the Spanish saying goes, “Avarice breaks the sack.”
Personal opinion: The main subject of this story is ambition. In my opinion this is something that is present in today´s society, where people always try to own more and more. And I believe that it perfectly expresses the consequences this often has. I believe that the story is a good critique of this attitude and that it reflects a social reality.
