Plot: / Trama:
They are a group of five friends. Four of them go to the house of the fifth, Mrs. Sasaki, who celebrates her birthday. The pearl of Mrs. Sasaki´s ring falls and she leaves it on the table. While her friends are there, the pearl disappears. Azuma, who is innocent, decides to declare herself guilty to calm a tense situation. Azuma says she swallowed it while eating a piece of cake. The ladies go home. Azuma and Kasaga leave in Azuma´s car. Azuma blames Kasaga and accuses her of having taken the pearl. Meanwhile, Yamamoto and Matsumura are in a taxi. Matsumura opens her purse and sees the pearl inside it. So they won´t think she took it, she decides to go to a store and buy a larger pearl and give that to Sasaki, who won´t lose a pearl but will know the pearl she has is not hers, and therefore not the missing pearl. The story gets more and more complicated. At the end of the story Sasaki has a new ring made for herself with two pearls, one larger than the other. She wears it without complexes or incidents.

The writer and playwright Yukio Mishima, whose real name was Kimitake Hiraoka, was born on January 14, 1925 and committed suicide in November, 1970. Critique: / Crítica:

The story is not a bad one. It is entertaining but for my taste without much of a plot. Although it is a Japanese story that I do not like, it is easy to read.

If you were Mrs. Matsumura, would you have bought another pearl? And if you were Mrs.Sasaki, would you have kept both pearls?
