Summary:
It´s about a little girl who is left alone at home because her parents have to go off to work in the fields. One day the little girl´s mother asks her neighbour Miss Clementine to please keep an eye on the girl looking out from the orchard. The girl was leaning out a window and Miss Clementine occasionally looked to see if she was okay and always saw the girl talking to someone and one day Clementine asked the little girl who she was talking to and the girl said she spoke to her doll, named Pipa and showed it to the neighbour, who was surprised because it was only a stick wrapped in cloth. Shortly after the girl became very sick and her brother stayed to take care of her but he didn´t take good care of her and the little girl told Miss Clementine that her brother had lost the doll. Miss Clementine asked the brother to return the doll but he didn´t. Miss Clementine saw the girl was so sad and ill that she went to buy a beautiful doll for the girl, but the girl didn´t accept it because she wanted Pipa and not the new doll. Day after day Miss Clementine took a different branch wrapped in a different cloth waiting for the little girl to tell her that one of these was Pipa. But the girl died before the real Pipa appeared. The summer came and the winter ice melted in the yard and Miss Clementine saw the doll and kept it.
Conclusion: in the end, the neighbour who did not see that the doll made from a single branch was beautiful became obsessed with it and finally saw it was beautiful.
Opinion: I liked the story because I find it very lively and entertaining. Although I think it has a sad ending. But I like the value the child gives to a simple twig from a tree.

Bio of the Author
Ana Maria Matute was the second of five children of a conservative and religious family that belonged to the Catalan burgeoisie. When she was four she became ill and went to live with her grandparents in a small village that influenced her work, especially "Stories of Argamasilla," published in 1961. She was ten years old when the Spanish Civil War began. The violence, misery and extreme poverty of the Post War Period marked her and her writings and she wrote many stories seen through the eyes of a child that barely understands what is happening. She wrote her first novel, "Little Theatre," when she was 17. Another novel, "Glowworms," was censored and not published. In 1952 she married fellow writer Ramón Eugenio de Goicoechea and her son Juan Pablo was born in 1954. In 1976 she was nominated for the Nobel Prize for Literature. In 1996 she was elected member of the Royal Academy of the Spanish Language and occupies the seat with the letter K.
