La Rama Seca
/
The Dry Branch

The story takes place in a village, in the houses of a little girl and her neighbour.
Personajes principales: la niña y la vecina Clementina.
Main characters: the little girl and her neighbour Miss Clementine.
Secondary characters: the little girl´s family, especially her brother, the husband of Miss Clementina, Don Leoncio, the village doctor.

Summary:
It´s about a little girl who is left alone at home because her parents have to go off to work in the fields. One day the little girl´s mother asks her neighbour Miss Clementine to please keep an eye on the girl looking out from the orchard. The girl was leaning out a window and Miss Clementine occasionally looked to see if she was okay and always saw the girl talking to someone and one day Clementine asked the little girl who she was talking to and the girl said she spoke to her doll, named Pipa and showed it to the neighbour, who was surprised because it was only a stick wrapped in cloth. Shortly after the girl became very sick and her brother stayed to take care of her but he didn´t take good care of her and the little girl told Miss Clementine that her brother had lost the doll. Miss Clementine asked the brother to return the doll but he didn´t. Miss Clementine saw the girl was so sad and ill that she went to buy a beautiful doll for the girl, but the girl didn´t accept it because she wanted Pipa and not the new doll. Day after day Miss Clementine took a different branch wrapped in a different cloth waiting for the little girl to tell her that one of these was Pipa. But the girl died before the real Pipa appeared. The summer came and the winter ice melted in the yard and Miss Clementine saw the doll and kept it.
Conclusion: in the end, the neighbour who did not see that the doll made from a single branch was beautiful became obsessed with it and finally saw it was beautiful.
Opinion: I liked the story because I find it very lively and entertaining. Although I think it has a sad ending. But I like the value the child gives to a simple twig from a tree.

Bio of the Author
Ana Maria Matute was the second of five children of a conservative and religious family that belonged to the Catalan burgeoisie. The story is not a bad one. It is entertaining but for my taste without much of a plot. Although it is a Japanese story that I do not like, it is easy to read.

The Gift of the Magi
/
El Regalo de Reyes

This story takes place at Christmas in a poor and dreary apartment.
The characters are Delia, a twenty-two year old girl that has got beautiful long blond hair and her husband Jim, also twenty-two, who owns a beautiful watch. They have little money and live in the poor apartment.

The story is as follows: The next day was Christmas and Delia wanted to give her husband, Jim, a present but she hadn´t any money. She went to some shops in town and saw a beautiful chain for her husband´s watch, but since she had no money she sold her hair and with that money bought the chain. When she returned to her apartment she showed her husband the chain but they were both surprised because Jim said that he had sold his watch to buy some beautiful combs for Delia, who no longer had long hair.

In my opinion this story is very beautiful because its moral is that love is the best of all presents.

The author of this story is O. Henry, American writer, journalist, chemist, bankteller and master of the short story. He was born in 1862 and died in 1910. O. Henry could speak Spanish very well and lived many years in Honduras, where he fled to avoid prison after being accused - possibly unjustly - of stealing money while working at a bank. He returned to the United States because his wife was dying and had to spend three years in prison.

Carlos Jurado´s Story Report / Ficha de un cuento de Carlos Jurado

KING YU
