The Fog Horn / La Sirena

Setting: The story takes place in a lighthouse near the sea.

Lugar de desarrollo de la acción: La acción se desarrolla en un faro junto al mar.

Characters: Three characters appear in the story: McDunn, the boss of the lighthouse since it was built, Johnny, a young man who works with McDunn and is the narrator of the story and a monster that appears at the lighthouse one night a year rising from the deep.

Personajes: En la historia aparecen tres personajes que son: McDunn, que es el jefe del faro desde que fue construido, Johnny, que es un chico joven que ayuda a McDunn con el faro y un monstruo, una criatura extraña que surge del mar una noche al año y se acerca al faro.

Conflict: Johnny and McDunn work at a lighthouse. The light and the sound its fog horn projects protect ships from fog. One cold night McDunn tells Johnny that that night something very strange is going to happen. During the past three years on this date a kind of prehistoric monster has risen from the very depths of the sea and approached the lighthouse. McDunn thinks this is because the lighthouse has a very potent fog horn that sounds exactly like the monster does when it roars. He believes the monster has lived alone for thousands of years and now thinks that there is someone like him beckoning him. That night when McDunn turns on the light and the fog horn, the sea monster appears shouting exactly like the fog horn. When McDunn turns off the fog horn, the monster charges against the lighthouse when it sees that it is not responding the way it expects it to. After destroying the lighthouse, the monster leaves. McDunn and Johnny are trapped in the cellar. There they remain buried under the ruins until people come to rescue them. Neither Johnny nor McDunn speak about the monster. They say the lighthouse was destroyed by huge waves. By the same time next year, a new lighthouse has been built. McDunn continues to work there and is the boss of the new lighthouse, but Johnny is married and lives near the coast.

Desarrollo: McDunn y Johnny trabajan en un faro. La luz y la sirena que el faro proyecta protegen a los barcos de la niebla. Una fría noche McDunn le cuenta a Johnny que esa noche va a ocurrir algo muy extraño. Durante los tres últimos años en esa fecha ha surgido de las profundidades del mar una especie de monstruo prehistórico y se ha acercado al faro. McDunn cree que es porque el faro tiene una sirena muy potente que suena exactamente igual que el monstruo cuando grita. McDunn cree que el monstruo ha vivido solo durante miles de años y ahora cree que hay alguien como él que le llama. Esa noche cuando McDunn enciende la luz y la sirena, aparece el monstruo, gritando igual que la sirena. Cuando McDunn apaga la sirena, el monstruo se abalanza sobre el faro al ver que no responde como él espera que lo haga. Tras destrozar el faro, el monstruo vuelve a desaparecer. McDunn y Johnny quedan atrapados en el sótano donde permanecen enterrados bajo los escombros hasta que vienen a rescatarles. Ni Johnny ni McDunn cuentan lo del monstruo. Dicen que el faro fue destrozado por olas gigantescas. Al año siguiente por esa fecha un nuevo faro ya ha sido construido. McDunn continua trabajando allí como encargado del nuevo faro, pero Johnny se ha casado y vive en un pueblecito de la costa.

Conclusion: In my opinion the story was a bit false but I like it much and consider that the conclusion is that there is no underestimating destiny.

Conclusión: Para mí es una historia un poco inverosímil pero me ha gustado mucho y considero que la conclusión es que no hay que subestimar el destino.
